CARBON – CYCLE ECONOMY DEMONSTRATION

Underground Sun Storage is a flagship project targeting the yet unsolved storage of fluctuating renewable energy (mainly sun and wind power). Increasing fractions of renewables cause problems in balancing the electric power grid. Aditionally the surplus energy production needs to be reduced by storing energy. The solution is to store electric energy in a chemical form (in this case hydrogen generated from water) in porous subsurface reservoirs. Thus, this research project is aiming to provide a cornerstone of the Austrian „Power to Gas“ strategy.

The research project is co-financed by FFG within the „Klima und Energiefonds“ framework and led by Rohöl-Aufsuchungs AG (RAG).

axiom’s task is to develop and test in field conditions a membrane gas separation system to control the hydrogen content in the gas mixture withdrawn from the underground reservoir.
